Archive Note: 20th Hussars Patrol Jacket

The patrol jacket worn by officers of the 20th Hussars in the late 19th century exemplifies the blend of function and tailored presence found in cavalry undress uniforms. These jackets were typically made of dark cloth with decorative braid and designed for wear in colder weather, often seen in dismounted order in period photography. Each Hussar regiment had its own variation; the 20th Hussars’ version featured distinctive plaited black cord shoulder straps and accessible hip pockets. An earlier example of this jacket appears in a photograph of Major Robert Alexander and Captain John Bird taken in Colchester around 1872–1873, before the regiment moved to Aldershot.

This historical form informed the silhouette and structural logic of the Jelika Jacket.
